May Fertilizer Recommendations

Below is a list of May fertilizer recommendations for your plants to keep your plants healthy and ready for the hot summer.

Fertilize your plants to get them in the healthiest condition before the hot summer is here. Well-fed plants handle the heat much better. For trees, we recommend fertilizing monthly until late fall.

We carry many brands of fertilizer including Ferti-lome, ColorStar (Nelson Plant Food), Medina, MicroLife and more.

Mulch

Make sure your plants have mulch, too, for better health. Mulching protects your plant’s roots from excessive heat and cold. Mulch helps roots retain moisture so less watering is needed to maintain the plant’s health. It also helps prevent weeds by choking off the air supply weeds need for growth. We recommend you mulch 3 inches deep for optimal results.

This is the time of year for your February fertilizers! You can fertilize many plants including the following:

Roses!

Rose Food fertilizer for roses.

From Fertilome, Rose Food is “designed for Roses to provide the right nutrients to produce green leaves and essential new growth on which new blooms develop.

Contains 14% Nitrogen for green growth, producing more and bigger canes, stems and leaves; 12% Phosphorus for root growth and increased flower production; 11% Potash to promote vigorous growth so plants are better able to resist disease and cold; and micronutrients for added color.”

How to Plant a Tree

How to plant a tree:

1. Research online how big your tree gets, then choose a spot to dig a hole. Don’t plant big trees or trees with large spreading roots near a house or permanent structure.

2. Use root stimulator to prevent transplant shock and help roots take to new dirt. Soak root ball in root stimulator as directed.

3. Put about a handful of fertilizer at the bottom of the hole and put tree in hole.

4. Fill the rest of hole with planter’s mix as needed.

5. Add more fertilizer on top. Amount varies on size of tree.

6. Fertilize tree at least monthly, even during the winter to keep it in good health.
